The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has recently issued a warning about the risks of taking the anti-impotence drug Viagra (sildenafil), and warns against prescribing it in patients with a history of heart attack or stroke or who have undergone a heart bypass surgery. In the latest edition of the New York Times, a New Jersey woman died from an unusual form of bleeding following an operation that had not been covered by the Medicare Part D plan in 2019. Her husband is a pharmacist and she lives with her husband in New Jersey. She has had no previous heart-related problems and was not taking any medication or substance.
A team of researchers from the University of Vermont, Vermont State University and the University of California San Diego have discovered that Viagra can cause serious cardiovascular problems, including heart attack and stroke. The risk is higher if you have heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes or high cholesterol, and are taking any medications that lower blood pressure, including alpha blockers (such as alfuzosin and doxazosin), nitrates (such as isosorbide) and HIV medications, as well as recreational drugs such as marijuana.
The researchers say that it may be important for patients to be closely monitored when taking Viagra. They say it is important to talk to their doctor before taking any new medication, including Viagra. If they prescribe Viagra, they say, they should talk to their doctor as soon as possible.
“It’s important to note that the risk of cardiovascular complications associated with Viagra is very small,” said Michael Schapiro, Ph. D., an associate professor of medicine and director of the Division of Cardiovascular Research at the University of Vermont. “There is very little information available about the possible risks of Viagra. The risk of cardiovascular complications is very small. It’s very important to use Viagra as directed, and to monitor patients for any possible cardiovascular risks.”
Schapiro said the study did not involve any patient data or a controlled trial. But he hopes that the researchers’ findings will help the public understand the risks of Viagra in patients who have heart disease.
“Our study suggests that it is important to be aware of the potential cardiovascular risks associated with Viagra, and to be aware of the potential risks of the medication,” Schapiro said.
Viagra is prescribed for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in men, the most common sexual dysfunction. It is not known whether Viagra has the same cardiovascular risk as other medications.
Viagra is not an approved drug in the United States and has not been evaluated in a controlled study in the past two decades. The drug has been shown to cause a fatal side effect, called priapism, or sudden cardiac death. A study conducted in the 1990s on men with erectile dysfunction found the use of Viagra to be associated with a 69% risk of priapism. Since then, many more people have had both the priapism and the sudden death risk. A recent study found that taking Viagra significantly increased the risk of sudden cardiac death by about 30%.
The researchers said they found no connection between taking Viagra and an increased risk of priapism, but suggested that there may be other risk factors. The researchers noted that some of the men had a high blood pressure. Viagra’s side effects, which include dizziness and chest pain, may not be as severe in some people.
Schapiro said he would like to see the data come from a study that is ongoing. If the researchers find Viagra’s cardiovascular risks are comparable to those of other medications, they may increase the risk of priapism.
“There are certain groups of people who may have heart disease and this may increase their risk of having heart attacks and strokes,” Schapiro said. “If these events occur at any time, it is not clear whether it is a heart attack or a stroke.”
Schapiro said he hopes that the findings will help to prevent the use of Viagra in patients who are not taking any medications, including Viagra.
He said that Viagra should not be used in men with erectile dysfunction who have a previous heart attack or stroke.
